What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship lets you work for a real employer, earning a wage, while training towards a nationally recognised qualification at the same time. You'll spend most of your week on the job gaining hands-on experience, with the rest spent on structured training — including regular days with Salt Training — that builds the knowledge, skills and behaviours your trade requires.

Will I get paid?
Yes. As an apprentice you're an employee, so you're entitled to at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices, currently £8.00 per hour (rates correct as of April 2026). This rate applies if you're under 19, or 19 or over and still in your first year. After your first year, if you're 19 or older, you move onto the standard National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

What if I don't have GCSE English and Maths?
You won't be turned away. If you don't already hold GCSE grade 4/C (or equivalent) in English and Maths, you'll study towards Functional Skills at the appropriate level as part of your apprenticeship. These are built into your programme.

What if I have a learning difficulty, disability, or additional needs?
Please tell us. We support learners with a wide range of additional needs, including those with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and can put reasonable adjustments in place — extra time in assessments, adapted resources, or additional one-to-one support, for example.

Will I have a job at the end of it?
Many go on to a permanent role with the same employer once they qualify, though this isn't guaranteed and depends on your employer's circumstances. A completed apprenticeship is a recognised, transferable qualification that supports you to progress elsewhere in the industry, move into a more senior or specialist role, or continue studying at a higher level.
